Been working a lot this summer. Lots of new personal work and lots of new clients.

The project that Stephen Maturen and I are working on is coming along.  Im actually taking a break from scanning negatives to write this.

A new personal project called Dissociation is up on the website.  Its still a work in progress but its beginning to take shape. The project is about disconnecting from reality at times of trauma in your life as a way of coping.  Being a personal project, there are lots of personal themes and the project is in itself a way of coping with things, reexamining people and places from a difficult time, and trying to visually represent what that disconnection feels like. Also, I have really taken to posting more frequently on my Tumblr than on here.  I really like Tumblr and how easy it is to see everyones work and share it.  Of course, there are some issues with proper credit for work, but its a relatively new site and those things seem to be getting worked out.  This blog will eventually be obsolete and everything will just be connected to my website. As soon as I can find someone to code all that shit up for me…

All I ever want to do when I meet someone from Chicago is talk Chicago; how much better the blue line is than the red but nothing is as pottery barn as the brown line, winters, Daley and parking meters, Rahm, etc. and for the most part I got to do that, but I had no idea that Rob hadnt lived there since the 90s.  Hes lived in Nashville. We did get to debate where the boundaries of Humbolt Park actually were; Armitage to Fullerton, and California to Sacramento, right……?  , Lane Tech, and a couple other things, so I got my fix. Rob and his wife were great, and it was incredibly interesting to get to talk to him first hand about his trial and his brothers upcoming one.

It was also great to get to work for The Sun Times finally. My photojournalism professor at Columbia College was Sun Times photographer and living photo saint, John White.  So to get to contribute to the same paper for an assignment was cool, front page was cool, and getting to have work on the news stand in my favorite city was cool.

Ahhhhh, the “person/people at a computer” assignment.  Always a challenge to make something different. I had about 30 minutes in Memphis to make some pictures of high school students taking new online courses. The courses are designed to help kids who are either behind in school so that they get caught up and graduate on time, or kids that are interested in getting ahead and might graduate early or earn college credit.  You can read Trip Gabriel’s story HERE.

The Radisson Hotel at Opry Mills was spared in the flood, but after renovating most of the area which actually was hit hard, the hotel decided to also fix things up a little.  Read Barbara DeLollis’ story HERE.

Tristan Denley is the Provost at Austin Peay University as well as a math PhD.  He recently wrote an alogorithm for a new system that Austin Peay is trying out for students picking classes.  The system uses the same idea that Netflix and Amazon use to suggest similar products to shoppers, but this system suggests courses to college students based on what they’ve taken and excelled in in the past.
